Division tables with remainder
This exercise is an aid to learning the division tables.
To find the result of a division, you have to look in the multiplication table of the divisor. This is because :
| The division operation | Corresponds to the operation |
|---|---|
| 26 : 4 = 6, remainder 2 | (4 x 6) + 2 = 26 |
So, to find the result of a division, we need to look in the multiplication table of the divisor for the nearest product lower to the dividend. The difference to this product is the remainder. For example :
26 : 4 = ?
In this case, the division is by 4. I search in the multiplication table of 4 for the row with a result less than or equal to 26 being as close as possible to 26. I find :
4 x 5 = 20
4 x 6 = 24
4 x 7 = 28
I deduce :
26 : 4 = 6, remainder ?
The remainder is :
26 - 24 = 2
26 being the divisor, and 24 is the product of 4 x 6. The result of the division is :
26 : 4 = 6, remainder 2
Always check that the remainder is less than the divisor.
